The Village Of Montacute

Montacute is best known for its National Trust House, Montacute House.

The village is mostly built from ham stone which is quarried from near by Ham Hill, giving the village its beautiful golden colour.

  • St Michaels Hill; Far reaching views on a clear day from the folly on top of this wooded hill, which has perhaps the best Norman motte & bailey earthworks in Somerset.
  • Ham Hill Country Park; great views, interesting walks. An iron age fort + Roman occupation and where the mellow coloured Ham stone was quarried to construct buildings in the surrounding villages.
